(Downer’s Grove, IL). Representative Elect Sean Casten called on the Republican-led Congress to extend funding for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) – set to expire December 7th – while renewing his call for passage of H.R. 6545 (Sheila Jackson Lee, D-TX),a long-term expansion of the landmark Act.
"This Administration continues to use desperate families attempting to cross our borders in hopes of asylum as cover for its own crossing of Constitutional, legal, and moral bounds. The recent scenes at our southern border -- including children in diapers being tear-gassed -- constitute a shameful image, contrary to the vision of our forefathers and their own immigrant histories. Seeking asylum is not a crime. As a newly elected Member of Congress, I will do all that I can to stop this Administration's ongoing assault on the American character."
Today, after a reported deadly shooting in Thousand Oaks, California, Sean Casten, Congressman-elect for Illinois’ Sixth Congressional District released the following statement:
“My heart goes out to all of the families who have lost loved ones in this tragic shooting. Weapons designed to kill large numbers of people quickly should not be on our streets, period. It is long past time that Congress implement the will of the people and pass common-sense gun safety measures.”
