St. Charles is a city in Kane and DuPage counties with a population of about 33,000. It is located along the Fox River about 40 miles from downtown Chicago, south of Elgin and north of Geneva. Having been incorporated in 1839, St. Charles is one of the oldest municipalities in the Chicago area, and is nearly as old as Chicago itself.

 

Living in St. Charles

Residents of St. Charles enjoy a high quality of life, thanks to the city’s excellent schools, scenic nature preserves, and thriving downtown district. In 2011, Family Circle magazine ranked St. Charles #1 in its list of the best towns and cities for families.

St. Charles is served by Community Unit School District 303, which includes two high schools, two middle schools, and more than a dozen elementary schools.

The city is also served by the The St. Charles Public Library, a large facility that has been named one of the best public libraries in the country.

St. Charles is a popular destination for visitors from the Chicago area and beyond. In addition to a variety of parks and other recreational areas, visitors come to St. Charles to enjoy the unique stores and restaurants in the city’s historic downtown district.

 

Congressional Representation

Portions of St. Charles are in Illinois’ 14th congressional district, while other areas of the city are in the 6th district.

In the 14th district, the Democratic candidate, Lauren Underwood, is running against the incumbent  Republican, Randy Hultgren. Ms. Underwood is a first-time candidate and is a registered nurse, with policy expertise in health care. Affordable health care for residents of the district is one of the main priorities of her campaign.

In the 6th district, Sean Casten is running against the incumbent Peter Roskam, who has held the 6th district congressional seat since 2006.
