South Elgin is a village nestled in the Fox River Valley in the northeastern half of Kane County. Its current population is estimated at around 23,000. In 2017, South Elgin was named 82 out of 100 of “America’s Best Places To Live” by Money Magazine.

 

Living in South Elgin

Students living in South Elgin are served by Elgin Area Unit School District U46, the second largest school district in Illinois, and St. Charles Community Unit School 303.

In August, residents of Elgin celebrate the annual RiverFest Express Festival at Panton Mill Park along the Fox River.  The festival features carnival rides, car show, craft show, small business expo, Valley Model Railroad, fireworks and live entertainment.

South Elgin is approximately 40 miles west of Chicago, accessible via I-294 and I-290.

What to See

A fun place to visit in South Elgin is the Fox River Trolley Museum, with a collection of 30 antique electric trolleys, railroad cars and locomotives dating from 1887 to 1959. Visitors can ride the Heritage Railroad over a four-mile ride along the banks of the scenic Fox River.

South Elgin also has several beautiful parks and forest preserves including the John Duerr Forest Preserve and the Kenyon Farm Forest Preserve. The John Duerr Forest Preserve features a waterfall, a trail bridge crossing the river, spots of natural prairie grass and a large carved wooden statue of Blackhaw. The Kenyon Farm Forest  Preserve has rolling wooded hills and a 25 acre pond surrounded by wetland vegetation. It is also part of an archeological site studying early Native American populations.

 

Congressional Representation

Portions of South Elgin are in Illinois’ 8th congressional district, while other areas of the village are in the 6th district.

In the 8th district, Jitendra Diganvker (R)is running against the incumbent Raja Krishnamoorthi (D) who won the 8th district seat in 2016.

In the 6th district, Sean Casten is running against the incumbent Peter Roskam, who has held the 6th district congressional seat since 2006.
