Just across Chicago Avenue from the golf club, the First Folio Shakespeare Festival company performs in stunning outdoor and indoor venues on the Mayslake Peabody Estate grounds. Two annual community events, Daisy Days and the Daisy Dash commemorate founder Henry Middaugh’s accidental daisy fields. In the late 1800s, Middaugh mistakenly planted daisy seeds instead of grass seed and the result was hundreds of acres of daisies blooming in Clarendon Hills, which was quite a tourist attraction at the time. For a bit of Gothic intrigue, diners at The Country House Restaurant can hear the legend of the ghost that is supposed to haunt the place. At Christmas time, Clarendon Hills is all aglow. Lawns and streets are lined with luminary candle lights on Christmas Eve, and during the Christmas Walk shoppers are greeted with cookies, hot chocolate and apple cider as they are serenaded by carolers and watch the tree lighting ceremony. |
