Sean Casten Endorsed by Sierra Club & League of Conservation Voters

Downers Grove, IL (May 2, 2018) – Illinois Sixth congressional district candidate Sean Casten has been endorsed by two leading environmental organizations, which cited Casten’s leadership in clean energy versus incumbent Peter Roskam’s debt to the oil industry.

“Voters in the Sixth District have a clear choice in November,” said Jack Darin, head of the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club. “Congressman Roskam is owned, lock-stock-and-barrel, by the country’s biggest polluters. Sean Casten understands that clean energy is essential to America’s future – not only for our health, but for the millions of jobs it will create.”

In endorsing Casten, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) pointed to Roskam’s lifetime score of voting for the environment only 7 percent of the time. His record in 2017 was even worse: voting only once out of 35 times on the pro-environment side.

“It’s not surprising that Roskam votes the way he does when he’s taken more than $340,000 in campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry,” said Darin of the Sierra Club. [Center for Responsive Politics Career Top Industries, accessed 3/22/17] “They’re getting what they pay for. He’s not going to change his spots after ten years in Congress.”

While Roskam has stated his belief that global warming is “junk science,” [College of DuPage Courier, 10/20/06], Casten has been a national leader in addressing climate change. A scientist and entrepreneur, Casten co-founded a company to profitably reduce greenhouse gas emissions while creating hundreds of jobs.

As Congressman, Casten will work to make the U.S. a global clean-energy leader, strengthening our economy and creating millions of good-paying jobs.

“I’m thrilled to have the endorsement of these two respected organizations because it makes the choice for voters crystal clear,” Casten said.

“We can continue down the destructive path of the Trump-Roskam attack on our environment. Or we can embrace a clean-energy future, protecting the health of our families and bringing our nation millions of good jobs.”
