Algonquin is a village in Kane and McHenry counties with a population of about 30,000. It is located about 40 miles from downtown Chicago along the Fox River, just north of West Dundee and Carpentersville. Formerly a small river town and recreation spot, Algonquin has grown rapidly in recent years, becoming a thriving center for shopping and industry while retaining its natural appeal.

 

Living in Algonquin

Algonquin offers an ideal combination of suburban tranquility, good schools, and easy access to shopping and recreation.

Several school districts serve students in Algonquin’s different residential areas. Most of Algonquin is covered by Community Unit School District 300, one of the larger districts in the area, while District 158 serves students in other areas of the village and surrounding towns.

The village operates several well-maintained parks, which host dozens of youth sports teams in addition to providing space for families to play and picnic.

What to See

Algonquin is home to several large shopping districts, including the village’s historic downtown area and a variety of shopping centers along the Randall Road corridor.

In winter, Algonquin’s geography provides opportunities for snowboarders, skiers, and sledders along the village’s slopes. The village also hosts community events throughout the year, including farmers’ markets, art festivals, outdoor concerts, and holiday celebrations.

 

Congressional Representation

Portions of Algonquin are in Illinois’ 14th congressional district, while other areas of the city are in the 6th district.

In the 14th district, the Democratic candidate, Lauren Underwood, is running against the incumbent  Republican, Randy Hultgren. Ms. Underwood is a first-time candidate and is a registered nurse, with policy expertise in health care.

In the 6th district, Sean Casten is running against the incumbent Peter Roskam, who has held the 6th district congressional seat since 2006.
